The world is getting better? - looking at the data

In this BBC video, Swedish academic, medical doctor, public speaker and statistician Hans Rosling tells the story of of the world's development - past, present and future.

Using vast quantities of public data (data from 200 countries over 200 years - 120,000 numbers) Rosling shows us how different - and how much better - the world we live in is from the world most of us imagine.

Two items to think about, that are not directly addressed in this video:

1) In the 1940's notice how strongly some countries were affected by the World War II - but not all the involved countries were affected similarly.

 

2) In showing current data, much of Africa is hugely improved compared to previous data. However,

the Congo, perhaps the number 1 trade partner with the West, is still near the bottom. What might we conclude from that?
