Joyce, I am so sorry to hear about Lydia's passing. We will keep you all in our prayers at this difficult time. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to meet you all. I am grateful for a network of like minded people that we can share our joys and sadness with. May God bless you all this Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope all your gatherings are wonderful. Keep safe if you're traveling.

On a sad note, Lydia Kay passed away on Monday. They took her off the heart/lung machine and told Julie and Russ that they wouldn't put her back on it if she couldn't live without it. She was just over a month old. We can be thankful that Mom and Dad were not left with the decision of whether to take Lydia Kay off the machine and pray that time will heal their grieving process. Wes, my husband, does the funeral on Saturday - first child he's ever buried. Keep all in your prayers please tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions for my meeting. It went well. I offered handouts on funding distributions, bulletin inserts on programs served, and info on Amextra. I spoke on our image as Lutherans to social services programs and directed them to learn more on the ELCA Hunger website. Working on the youth angle and a team of interested youth to be on a synod committee on justice issues. We'll see! We need a reunion to assimilate our experiences. Peace to all and your families.

I would like to add my thanks to all of you for being such an inspiration in working in the struggle of World Hunger. I am just starting to get the message of our trip to our congregation and others -- it's a humbling experience. Whether we work separately, or together, the goal to help others help themselves is the same. God bless all of you and your families during this Thanksgiving!

I saw Arthur Simon last week, bought and have been reading his new book - it is amazing to think how a faithful response to hunger/poverty by a handful (initially 7) can result in the positive impact Bread for the World has had. Arthur had a saying of his father's about problems - "you can either put a fence at the top of a cliff or an ambulance at the bottom" - much relief work, charity is the ambulance at the bottom and is needed. Advocacy and I'd say no accompaniment work - empowering people to create their own solutions - is a fence at the top. I am thankful that the ELCA has such strong ministries for both the ambulance and the fence work.

Margie -
Mary's comments of support are so true - stay faithful and don't worry about the results; even in a synod with a strong hunger task force, too many people don't care, get overly focused on 'little' issues - hence the running uphill backwards. After a while, it is hard to not include hunger/poverty/justice issues everywhere - just ask my confirmation students last night, as we discussed "don't steal" and "don't covet" commandments - became a jumping off point for the sin of having more than enough when so many don't have any.

I am giving my 1st post trip powerpoint sermon this Sunday - focusing on Amextra - probably still too many slides. Preparing last weekend and yesterday was difficult. At my annual exam the other day, I mentioned the Mexico City trip - my gyno recalled his 1st visit to Mexico City - flying into this metropolis, poverty all around (pretty much on target) - and he shook his head, overwhelmed by the problems, and commented 'and that is just one country.' Too many feel overwhelmed - our call is to lift up the moments of light- show that God's work is being done, inspite of the multiple obstacles. The last thing the MD said to me was "Keep praying!" Amen!

Go get 'em, Margie! I view it like the water dripping on the rock. Over time, little by little, the rock is changed forever! I didn't have a synod team or even a list of contacts when I started a couple years ago either. Little by little the program has grown in Florida, even with the strong influence of outside organizations based here. God is good! The wonderful support network of hunger leaders across the country and the invaluable assistance of our fearless leaders in the churchwide office make it oh so much easier! I still feel like I'm running uphill backwards half the time, but the issues of World Hunger are immense, and we can't fix it overnight. We can just pray and "Let go and let God". We're all behind you and the Holy Spirit will be with you!
