Dear Ethics of Eating Colleagues new (Region 7!) and "old" (past events),
Another hat I wear is as a member of the Lutheran World Federation (www.lutheranworld.org) international council. Today, I got an article across my news feed from them lauding, "Global Economic System Hazardous for the Common Good."
Take a look. (http://www.lutheranworld.org/lwf/index.php/global-economic-system-hazardous.html)
What do you think? Here are two questions related to the article:
1. "He urged churches to pay more attention to the systematic study of economics by suggesting that economics should be added to the curriculum of theological colleges and seminaries alongside philosophy, moral theology and ethics." Do you think economics should be added? If so, how?
2. "The current, dominant systems of consumption, production and distribution were geared towards the private accumulation of wealth and were founded in greed, she noted.
The challenge, she added, was to develop a ‘greed line’ or structural greed indicators to pursue the fullness of life for all." What would you include in a list of structural greed indicators?
For additional reading on "greed," check out this public statement from the Eleventh LWF Assembly this past summer (2010).

What do you think?
What books, articles, or movies did you find helpful in learning more about how our eating patterns impact those who are suffering from hunger and poverty? Here are some ideas to start the…Continue

Comment by Mark on April 16, 2012 at 12:23pm The Meatrix video and followups are at themeatrix.com . Thiese are short spoofs of the Matrix films with the theme of Family vs Factory farming. They are fun with a nice set of additional resources. (I found it linked to the Equal Exchange Fair Trade web site also an outstanding resource.)
Hello! I thought you might find this NY Times article interesting. Hope everyone had a merry Christmas!

Comment by Mary Minette on October 21, 2011 at 12:55pm The piece you linked is, I think, sort of misleading--what's going on is all budget-related and will impact the shape of the next farm bill, but nothing I've heard indicates that they're actually planning to push through the policy legislation that quickly (or even very soon). The R and D leaders of both the House and Senate Agriculture Committees sent a joint letter to the budget supercommittee early this week that made recommendations for what they should cut and what they should protect. If the supercommittee follows their recommendations (and they aren't obligated to, but I imagine it carries some weight that the recommendations are fully bipartisan) it will definitely dictate some of what they do in the next farm bill because it dictates which programs get funded.
If you're interested in seeing their recommended cuts (and they recommended some interesting things), here's a link to the letter:http://agriculture.house.gov/press/PRArticle.aspx?NewsID=1471
Comment by Lena Warren on October 21, 2011 at 11:03am So, I'm curious: What is up with this? Is it true that they are trying to push a new food/farm bill through in two weeks??

Comment by Mary Minette on October 13, 2011 at 12:58pm Here's an article on some new findings on "no till" practices from the Rodale Farm Systems Trial (for those of you who were at the region 7 event two weeks ago!):

Comment by Mary Minette on October 4, 2011 at 12:21pm I just found this cool chart on the Washington Post website: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/what-we-eat-in-...
It's a color chart of everything the average American eats in a year--some of it's pretty surprising!
